On Friday 17th November the Southwold Primary School Choir were among 700 children selected to participate in The Big Sing, Britten-Pears Arts flagship young people’s performance events at the prestigious Snape Maltings Concert Hall.
The Big Sing fills the Concert Hall with young people from across Suffolk, both children and teachers gathering to sing through a selection of songs as part of a massed choir. The event was also streamed live to several thousand children around the country.
The children were led by distinguished conductors and educators Jenny Trattles and Charles MacDougall, and accompanied at the piano by Southwold’s very own Nathan Williamson. They were put through their paces with a very vigorous warm up, before being coached by Jenny and Charles on songs by Roderick Williams, Alexander Campkin, Charlotte Harding, YolanDa Brown, and many others, including Benjamin Britten. All the songs were commissioned by Britten-Pears Arts and co-written with young people on a theme of identity, amplifying their thoughts and feelings on life and the world around them.
Participating in the Big Sing also led to a special visit by Jenny Traddles in the run up to the event to rehewarse and help prepare the chidlren for the special day.
